What makes a team consistently win? It is definitely not on the shoulders of sheer talent alone that a team can win consistently, although that does indicate the potential of individual members. A team may outperform another good team in a one-off match based on the heroics of a brilliant individual. However, the law of averages pulls down that brilliant individual in another match and therefore you need something more besides individual brilliance to win consistently.
That something more is nothing else but the integrated magic of team spirit. Yes, integration of individual team members into a well-oiled machine is what makes a team stand out among the competition. The team that has a higher level of integration, grit, and spirit of working together as a single entity will march ahead any day. In fact it has been found that talent may sometimes cause ego feelings to develop in some individuals. When that happens, the brilliance of such persons, actually works against the dictat of the need of the hour. Usually what happens is that a brilliant individual may start thinking that he is now over and above the team as a whole. He may start dictating terms to other members of the team. Thereafter, all the energy of such brilliance dissipates into how to always place his ego above the rest of them all combined. It is then a sad day for the team because it heralds the team's downfall. The team, which had been winning earlier, begins to lose to several teams comprising maybe only mediocre players. On the other hand, you will find that a well-knit team consisting of averagely talented individuals does win more often than not. See, winning and losing are all part of the game, but the team that takes a loss much better and lives on to fight another day is the one that will outsmart better equipped teams on any day. It is how you take the loss of a game is what marks out a champion team from the competition. If the loss of a game makes individual team members pass on the blame to each other, then rancor is already sown in the minds of team members against one another. The mental condition of the players of such a team cannot but be weakened. The result is that in the next game the attention of the players is already diverted to the feelings each of the players harbors against other members of his team. If the loss of a game results in more unity among the team members than in the last game, the team comprising such individuals has already left the loss behind it. It is already ready to face the next match with double resolve. God help the team that faces such a resolute wall of a team for it will become very difficult to beat the combined force and determination of adversity-hardened lot of team men.
