Individual Ego Has No Place In Teamwork
Many a times you may have had occasion to witness fallout among team members over some issue or the other. The result is that it sunders the team into fragmented individuals and the team then becomes history.

To you who is witnessing the event as an outsider fan of the team, it becomes straightaway evident that whatever the cause of the rift among team members it is bad for the future of the team. However, to individual team members, because they are so involved in the nitty gritty of team performance, the same is not apparent. Each one of them feels that it is their own view of things that is right and that of others is not of any importance.

If only individuals know what it is to be part of a team, they would not indulge in mudslinging on their own colleagues or be jealous of them. Being a part of a team means to realize that a team can always achieve something that is greater than the entire individual efforts taken together. A team means unity in the face of adversity and difficult circumstances. It means an honor to be a member of a team as then you leave your identity completely behind in the striving for glory as a team.

Sometimes what happens is that a talented individual who may have played a major role in the team's performance, starts thinking of himself as being something superior to not only his colleagues but also to the entire team as a cohesive entity. The member gets so much involved in his own performance, that the team's overall objective gets superseded in his mind with his own importance. It is as if his individual ego wants to assert his importance as lording over all his team mates.

Such a mindset is straightaway detrimental to a team's future performance, because instead of the team's overall goal, what gains supremacy and wants to get highlighted is individual praise. When an individual wants to hog all the limelight what angers the other team members is that their combined effort is being completely negated.

This detracts from the combined positive effort of all team members in winning over the opposing team, because, they are then engaged more in in-fighting amongst themselves. The team has lost even before taking its position in the field because of an essentially negative mindset. Any average competing team can then easily beat the above team on any given day.

A team takes time to build and time to create understanding between team members. If a talented team member has any ego problems, it is better for the team manager or coach to replace him with another who knows that team unity any day is greater than individual ego. Therefore, when you are part of a team, it is better that you do not allow your individual ego to assert itself.
