Everyone has to be a team player at some point in their life. Whether it is just within the family, on a sports team or at workplace, being a team player is an essential part of life. If you are a team player, you know the basics. In case you are not, it is perhaps the time to get some coaching.
Learning to be a team player can open up a variety of new opportunities for you as people would gradually recognize that the skills you have to offer can be used by their teams. This article offers a few tips that can help you be an effective team player. * Be responsible. If you are asked to perform a task, do it. If you are needed to go somewhere for the team, whether to a meeting or to help the team at an event, go there and reach on time. * Listen to other team members effectively without trying to judge them unnecessarily. This is known as active listening. For some, this can be one of the hardest feats to achieve. * Be supportive. Compliment other teammates of the team when they have worked rigorously or prevailed over a challenge. Often a coworker who gives everyone support is more helpful than the most skilled member of the team. * Communicate effectively. If you face a difficulty, explain it properly before it becomes too big to handle. It is okay to inform people about anything you feel is not appropriate, just remember to be courteous when you express your opinions. * Be flexible. Even if you have always worked one way, be willing to try some other way. There can be many ways to skin a cat. * Contribute. Always be willing to share the workload. This does not mean you have to become a martyr, but work with your teammates to make things happen. * Make your best effort. A good team player gives his best shot at all times because failing to do so can mean not giving support to his teammates. * Be selfless. Involve your teammates in the task instead of trying to do the whole thing yourself. Also, be prepared to give your job to another person if he is more skilled at it. * Be Generous. Give credit to other teammates where it is due. And more significantly do not take credit for others' work. * Set an Example. You can complain about every situation that can be improved. Instead take action yourself to make it better. Do not wait for others to set something right. You lead the way by taking the initiative. The abovementioned tips should help you work effectively as a member of any team. Related Articles
